I installed a "Multi mount winch" on the front of my JD 4400. I fabricated a trailer hitch receiver on the weight extension bracket and am still able to put 8 suitcase weights on the bracket. I can use this winch on the hitch receiver on my pickup too. I could pull my tractor up hill with brakes set. I thought this might be handy if I ever get stuck or have to pull a tree down or move a log, just to help get me out of a bind. Also I can move a trailer or log splitter on the hitch mounted on the front. The winch is an XD9000i.My battery only has 500 reserve amps, 750 reserve recommended for use of winch.Best regards,Hillbilly

hello ,
i am getting a warn winch for my land trac that i am going to mount on a trailer reciver hitch , [at the 3ph ]
warn makes a removable hitch that the winch mounts on .
do you think this 3ph will hold up to this instulation the winch is the 8,000 lp
i am hearing that once it is hooked up to the tractor battery it is not good to run them both at the same tim correct ?
does any one think this is not a good idea and should mount it on the front where the weight bar is .
i am open to sugestions your fourm is very helpful THANKS !!!!!!!!!

Sounds like it might be a bit unstable. I'd check the rated 3ph-lift capacity of the tractor. However, I'd keep in mind that rated capacities often don't allow for front ballast weight to improve the tractor's balance. Side stability may still remain an issue though. 3ph winches intended to heavy loads often have butt plates to take the load off the 3ph, but the tractor can’t be driven then.

I wouldn't run a tractor and winch from the battery at the same time. I'd worry that the winch could create an abnormally low resistance load on the alternator if the battery ran down. Regulators are supposed to limit alternator current, but I'd just as soon not depend on such things.

Seems to me that the rated capacity of a three point hitch has more to do with what it will lift rather than its structural strength as it relates to horizontal loads. I doubt you could rip the lower arms off a tractor with a 8000# winch. Besides, with that much power it would just move the tractor, even up a vertical wall. ....

I would recomend pulling from the draw bar,its the lowest pointof pull, after all thats what its designed for. Pulling from the 3pt might put yyou on a tippy situation, if you have to pull from an angle. ....

I think 3ph ratings are somewhat safety oriented. Most 3ph's will lift more than their rated weight, but then an operator has to be very concerned about stability. Added front ballast will balance the tractor front to back but may not do much for side stability.

You're right now that I think about it. I think the butt plates on 3ph winches have more to do with keeping the tractor from being pulled to the load than with supporting the 3ph load. ....
